External Sector — lesson overview

Trade and foreign exchange

Exports sell goods or services to non-residents; imports purchase them. International transactions include more than merchandise trade.

An exchange rate expresses one currency’s price in another. State the quotation before deciding whether a number represents appreciation or depreciation.

In a rupees-per-dollar quotation, a rise from ₹80 to ₹84 per dollar means the rupee has depreciated against the dollar.

Balance of payments

The balance of payments records economic transactions between residents and non-residents during a period under its accounting framework.

The current account includes trade in goods and services and income and transfer components. Financial transactions belong to distinct categories.

A merchandise trade deficit is not automatically equal to the current-account deficit because other current-account components matter.

Economic connections

Currency movements affect import costs, export competitiveness, foreign-currency liabilities and purchasing power through different channels.

Domestic inflation, global demand and pricing behaviour can modify the effect of exchange-rate changes; outcomes are not mechanically identical for every firm.

Foreign-exchange reserves are assets held by the monetary authority, not the same measure as every private resident’s foreign assets.
