Language Pedagogy — lesson overview
Language as communication
Language teaching develops listening, speaking, reading and writing for meaningful purposes; these abilities interact rather than existing as isolated drills.
Learners may understand more than they can produce, and errors can reveal developing hypotheses about language.
A learner’s home language can provide a resource for understanding and participation rather than an automatic obstacle.
Reading and writing
Reading involves constructing meaning from text using decoding, vocabulary, background knowledge and comprehension processes.
Writing develops through planning, drafting, feedback and revision; copying a model accurately does not by itself demonstrate independent composition.
Comprehension questions should include explanation and inference where appropriate, not only exact-word recall.
Teaching and assessment
Provide models, purposeful interaction and opportunities to use language with gradually increasing independence.
Corrective feedback should match the learning goal; interrupting every utterance can obstruct fluency-focused communication.
Assess with relevant tasks and varied evidence, distinguishing pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and communicative effectiveness.
